Chapter 15:
Matthew’s gaze was cold, cutting across Veronica with little more than a flicker of interest before it landed on Xavier. “What’s this? Another girlfriend, Xavier?” Xavier, in his usual cocky manner, grinned widely as he threw an arm around Veronica’s waist. “Allow me to introduce her: Roni, my new girlfriend.” He then pointed toward Matthew. “And this is Bloomstead’s most famous young bachelor, the ruthless business magnate, Matthew Kings.”
Despite Xavier’s attempt to flatter Matthew, Veronica couldn’t miss the hint of insincerity behind the praise. She shared that distaste, which only made her respond in kind. Turning to Matthew, she nodded slowly and spoke with deliberate formality, “So you’re Matthew Kings. Your name precedes you. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person.”
Matthew’s face darkened slightly, his sharp gaze cutting through her words like ice. Even his assistant, Thomas, twitched in discomfort, sensing the tension in the air. “Is this really your type, Xavier?” Matthew’s voice was low and cold. “An ugly woman like her?”
Veronica, unfazed, shot back with a smirk. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Matthew.”
“Seems like Young Master Xavier’s taste isn’t exactly what I would call refined. Maybe I could recommend an eye doctor?” she taunted, her words dripping with sarcasm.
Xavier chuckled, clearly amused by the banter. He gave a hearty laugh that echoed around the washroom before suddenly pressing his hand to his chest as nausea overtook him. He bent over, dry heaving into the bin. After a few moments, he put an arm around Veronica for support. “Roni, I feel terrible. Help me out of here, would you?”
Veronica nodded, carefully shifting his arm around her shoulder to keep him upright. They started toward the door, but Matthew and Thomas didn’t move aside, blocking the way.
With a cold glare, Veronica spoke, her voice dripping with mock politeness. “Mr. Kings, if you’d be so kind, please step aside.”
For a moment, Matthew’s piercing gaze held hers, his frigid aura pushing back against her. The silence stretched, but eventually, he took a few steps back, allowing them to pass. “Thank you, Mr. Kings!” Veronica called back with exaggerated sweetness, her tone thick with irony.
Xavier, clearly amused, mimicked her. “Thanks, Mr. Kings… Urk!” He dry heaved again, and Veronica’s hand shot out instinctively to steady him, worried he might end up vomiting on Matthew. Once they were far enough, the two left the washroom.
Behind them, Thomas, unable to hold back any longer, spoke. “Young Master Matthew, should I send someone to teach Xavier a lesson?”
Matthew’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. “Don’t waste your time. A worthless man like him isn’t worth lowering myself over.”
Thomas hesitated but remained silent, watching Matthew walk away.
Outside the Twilight Club, Veronica helped Xavier into the waiting car, his servant already there to greet them. “Did he drink too much again?” the servant asked with a sigh.
“Yep. Just get him home and sober him up,” Veronica replied, wrinkling her nose at the overpowering smell of alcohol on her clothes.
Xavier’s servant nodded. “Thank you, Miss Murphy.”
Veronica waved him off and turned to leave, but just as she was about to step away, Xavier grabbed her arm. “You know Matthew Kings?” he asked, his words slurred but sharp.
Veronica raised an eyebrow, trying to feign indifference. “What? Him? He’s just a big name. He’s untouchable, like a legend. There’s no way he and I would know each other.”
Xavier looked at her, a smile breaking through the haze of alcohol. “Haha, yeah, you’ve got a point.” He waved goodbye and got into his car, leaving Veronica standing by the entrance for a moment. After she gathered herself, she returned to the club.
However, as she walked past Room 888, someone suddenly pulled her inside, pressing her up against the door. Veronica tensed. “Matthew? What the hell is this?” she demanded, her voice a mixture of confusion and anger. “Let go of me!”
Matthew’s face was an icy mask, his grip painfully tight on her cheek. “You came to work at a club to reel in losers like Xavier?” His voice was a low growl, and Veronica could feel the heat of his words burn through her.
She scowled, refusing to give in. “What if I am? I like Xavier. What does it have to do with you?”
Matthew’s expression darkened further, his grip tightening. “It hasn’t even been that long since you slept with me, and already you’re chasing after someone else? Just how much of a slut are you?”
Veronica’s eyes sparked with fury, her lips curling into a bitter smile. “Well, we’re both adults here. It’s normal for two adults to find pleasure with each other. Oh, wait…” Her eyes flashed with a sudden thought, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “Someone like you, who can’t even get it up without popping a pill, probably wouldn’t understand.”
The words hit Matthew like a punch to the gut. His face contorted with rage, his entire body radiating cold fury. It was the greatest humiliation for any man, and Veronica had just pushed every button she could.
But Matthew was not someone who would tolerate such insults lightly.
The tension in the air was palpable as the moment stretched on.
